Second visit to Hayward Gallery for the 'art of change '

After few visit on the listed exhibition for essay 1, and reading to the suggested bibliography, I got more ideas of medium. And i thought the exhibition in Hayward Gallery is the most interesting and suitable one for me to experiment my point of view to the importance of medium in a work of art.

Medium could be not only the physical substance, medium could even be that the message. Once it exist, medium itself must carrying a role to express the work of art and it is inseparable from an experience or reading of a work of art.

While experiencing an work of art, the more realistic the work, the less prominent is the medium and discipline. It is one of a cutting point to view the importance in the reading or experience of a work of art.

I want to apply this theory to the work of  Sun Yuan and Peng Yu, Civilization Pillar”(2001). When people first sight it, it is a pillar with bright-colored made by some unknown substance, and a question of what material it is using may raise in audience mind in order to link up to the metaphors . The medium shows here is very obstructive that make the viewers cannot ignore its participate. It also shows the medium itself bears a significant meaning in the artist idea and essence concept which the human fat is actually a signifier, a monument, that symbolizes our own time by hiding in the outlook of a pillar from a magnificent temple from distance. It could be analyzed as the the artist adding value to a meaningless object like fat here to make the art work works, but the fat itself as a material contain its own characteristic and content ,is also supporting back the artist thought. Which means the medium and the artist concept constructed a inseparable symbiotic relationship and “content of any medium is always another medium” . Therefore , medium is the message, and this show the importance of medium in reading and experiencing a work of art.
