Exhibition : Kiki Smith.

Timothy Taylor Gallery
Kiki Smith : Behold

Today I went to visit Timothy Taylor Gallery which is one of the listed exhibitions for our essay writing, this is my first time to watch Kiki Smith's art work, and my feeling is like jumping into a world of narrative and fantasy. Her works first impression to me is fancy and storytelling, i like it. Afterwards, I read the introduction, known that smith has ' used the body as metaphor, drawing upon myth, spirituality and narrative to consider human condition, its strenfths and its frailties' since 1980s. Her works has been concerned with the interdependence of the natural world; her exhibitions and installations express the vitality of an animistic, spiritually charged universe.
In this exhibition, it have a major theme emerges from the number of works that closely interrelate with or echo each other.

After visiting the gallery, it raise my interest in Kiki smith's work, so I borrow few books about her from the school library, I found that her early works is really different style while comparing to the one i watched today, her past work is more about birth and regeneration. In general, I like her recent fairy-tale more.

Exhibition : William Klein and Daido Moriyama

 William Klein and Daido Moriyama

In the exhibition, there's 300 photograph's mainly black and white combined both artist William Klein and Daido Moriyama. It's like entered into the black and white world constructed by the scene and culture of New York and Tokyo.

Compare to this two photographer, I personally like William Klein more,  to me his pictures are very narrative, and i feel like theres a story behind every pictures.

Such as this picture,  two women crossing the road one with black dress and one with white . I like the composition and how the two women dressed, they made a big contrast, although there a lot of people in the background but the two women still being the focus point in this picture

I
Tino Sehgal 's Turbine Hall, These Assiociations.
At first I didn't know there's an performance art happening  in the turbine hall, i thought the crowed was invited to complete a task or similar activities. Until my friend told me one of the essay gallery reference in the turbine hall, and we found nothing except a group of crowed, then we realized the medium here is the people not an object. And maybe the audience is necessary to take part in the performance to make art work complete.

A man came and spoke to us about his creepy story about the death of his flatmate. Which make us so confused.

What's going on in this experience of an art work???

Anyways, I do found it relevant to my essay question, which the medium is the crowd and the audience.

Exhibition: Art of change new directions from China

Art of change

This is one of the listed gallery for my first essay. My essay question is :
How important is the medium or discipline in experiencing or reading an work of art?
Art of change is the first exhibition i chose to visit which is in Hayward Gallery, it is the exhibition to focus solely on contemporary installations and extraordinary live art by some of China's most innovative artists ,in works dating from the 1980s to present day.
Below is a work piece by Ying Mei Duan.

This is a photo i took after she invited me singing in front of other audience, tho i dun really understand the aim of her request, how does it related to the art performance which call ' Happy Yingmei' (2011/12), I like the atmosphere she create in the the small dark room, she make it transform as a rare forest with a secret and mystery fairy.

This is another work by a couple of artist Sun Yuan and Peng Yu . This is an art work called “Civilization Pillar”(2001), created by them, placed on a pedestal, a 4 meter-high semi-translucent column with an amber appearance which is made of greasy and sticky human fat. The artists have written that 'man could consume all the extra energies within the human ''pillar'', and there is no need to think about the meanings that lie behind doing that . Because the ''Magnificent Pillar'' itself is just the accumulation of human fat, therefore the existence of the pillar is totally meaningless.'

And behind the pillar, an piece of work called 'I Didn't Notice What I am Doing' as 'Fake Darwinism' (2012), an installation consists of two sculptures: a triceratops and a rhinoceros. The artists aim at misleading people conjecture that the two animals are related in a some way of evolutionary, based on the similarities of their appearance, however they actually belong to completely different species. The artist explain that the main crux of the project lies in its investigation into the manner in which relationships are constructed or how correlations are made. It raise questions as to how human being create connections between things and to grasp the world
by placing things in relation to each other which is often without scientific foundation.

I do think this exhibition is quite helpful to my essay writing, it raise more ideas of what kind of role did the medium representing. But I will keep going some more exhibition before I make the decision of exhibition reference for my first essay.
